Introduction

You’ve been feeling it, haven’t you? that inkling in the back of your mind and in the bottom of your belly that you’re ready for something new.

But are you really ready for this something more daring and let’s face it more YOU?

Planning a pivot

Pivoting is a journey, not the destination. The biggest misnomer in the online business and personal branding space is that you need to have your shit figured out when you first launch. WRONG! You can’t just pivot once and be done with it. The successful badass bitches and bros of the world refine until they feel like it’s a match. Kinda like dating yourself until your find yourself. (Too meta?). Anyway, you need to continuously pivot until your brand and business for that matter is where it needs to be. Planning isn’t just an option; it’s essential for staying focused on the future and seeing what opportunities are out there for you.

Planning is also a process that takes time — not one or two meetings and then some emailing back and forth about it later on, but rather an ongoing commitment from everyone involved in making decisions about where the company should head next.

Pivoting your business

A pivot is quite simply a change of direction. It can be positive or negative, and it can mean a lot of things depending on the context:

  • A pivot may signify a change in strategy. For example, if you’re running an online store that sells shoes online and you want to start selling clothes online instead, then this would be considered a pivot. In this case, your business model has changed from selling shoes to selling clothes—that is how we define “pivot” here at Nerd Fitness!
  • A pivot might also mean that you are moving away from one tactic and towards another tactic that is more effective for reaching your goals (such as going from paying Google Ads on Facebook ads).

Don’t mindfuck yourself & make yourself wrong.

But here’s the thing: it’s okay to make mistakes. Low key, you will make mistakes more often than you think and more often than you make money.

I promise.

And so will everyone else out there. So don’t be afraid of making a mistake or two because it doesn’t mean that your business is going down in flames!

Changing your mind doesn’t mean you failed.

I want to talk about the importance of changing your mind.

This is not a new idea, but it’s something I hadn’t really considered until recently. When we’re growing our companies and doing all this work, we often get stuck in our ways and can’t see other options for moving forward. This is when pivoting comes in handy (especially if you’ve been at this for a while) because it can help us put ourselves in the best position possible for success.

Changing your mind doesn’t mean that you failed or that you did something wrong; it means that you’re able to adapt and learn from previous experience so that you can be better next time around! Let’s not forget that refinement is a master stroke of genius, what you go through will inevitably help the next batch of guys and gals you attract.

Leverage what you’ve got

This is KEY.

In the words of Steve Jobs, “The only real mistake is the one from which we learn nothing.” So if your business isn’t working, don’t give up! Refine, audit and continue to pivot like a boss. If a pivot doesn’t work out, pivot again. And again. And again until it does. Don’t be afraid to try new things because every experience brings us closer to where we’re meant to be in life—and that’s exactly what pivoting is: an opportunity for growth and change at every step along the way.

Said more simply, the KEY to a great pivot is to leverage your best assets and create the business you want around that, then outsource the rest.

Pivot in Phases

THIS IS THE real key to a successful PIVOT.

Here’s the tea, when you’re wanting to do a major pivot, it’s important to do it in phases. For example, let’s say I want to pivot from a coaching model to an influencer model with products, the key is to PHASE in PHASE out. Phase in products, phase out services over time until your audience understands. This is what we call in C-Suite level branding & marketing “proving the concept.”

How to know when you’re ready for the next level.

You know you’re ready for the next level when you’re open to change, willing to try new things, and willing to fail. You have to be willing to learn and be uncomfortable.

Doing things well doesn’t mean you won’t have to change them later

It may seem like a good idea to do things well, but doing things well doesn’t mean you won’t have to change them later. The most important thing is being flexible and adaptable. Being a good listener will help you learn what your customers need from you, and being a good observer will help you understand the market better. So don’t get too attached to any one way of doing things because it’s likely it’ll change at some point!

Conclusion

I’ve said it many times, but I’ll say it again: nothing about this business is linear. So get used to the idea of having to pivot when things don’t go as planned. And know that it’s totally possible—even likely—that you will pivot more than once before going public or selling out or whatever other big thing your heart desires. You will make a plan, execute it, and then have to change that plan because something isn’t working right. But it’s not failure—it’s just doing what needs to be done in order to serve yourself and your business better.
